In 1998, the Sisters of Divine Providence instituted the Ketteler Award to honor individuals who demonstrate a strong commitment to social justice. The award, named for Wilhelm Emmanuel von Ketteler, Bishop of Mainz, Germany, and co-founder of the Congregation of the Sisters of Divine Providence, is presented annually.
On April 20, 2024, the Sisters of Divine Providence will honor Bishop Thomas J. Gumbleton, the 2024 recipient of the Ketteler Award in recognition of his advocacy for justice.
On April 15, 2023, the Sisters of Divine Providence presented this award to Bryan Massingale, S.T.D. in recognition of his advocacy for justice.
On August 3, 2020, the Sisters of Divine Providence presented the Ketteler Award for Social Justice to the Rev. James Martin, S.J.—Jesuit priest, author, editor at large at America, the national Catholic review, and a Consultor to the Vatican’s Dicastery for Communication.
On August 2, 2019, the Sisters of Divine Providence presented the Ketteler Award for Social Justice to Sister Hilary Hooks, Sister Margaret Mertens, Sister Zita Telkamp, Sister Therese Cunningham, and Associate Marlene McClain.
On August 5, 2017, the Sisters of Divine Providence presented the Ketteler Award for Social Justice to Dr. Zane H. Gates and Associate Jane Kerr.
